Reviving the Debate on the Regulation of Morocco's Pharmaceutical Market

The conversation surrounding the regulation of the pharmaceutical market in Morocco has resurfaced, particularly following a recent opinion issued by the Competition Council. This opinion highlights the vulnerabilities present in the current economic model governing wholesale drug distribution, despite the continuous growth in the revenue generated by distribution companies from 2016 to 2024. According to the findings, pharmacy revenues in 2016 were approximately 11.12 billion dirhams, with professional income reaching 1.16 billion dirhams. By 2024, these figures are projected to rise to 13.53 billion dirhams in revenues and 1.21 billion dirhams in professional income.

The data reveals a notably uneven structure within the pharmacy market. Approximately 70% of pharmacies report annual revenues below 1.2 million dirhams, while 20% achieve revenue figures between 1.2 and 2.5 million dirhams. Only a mere 10% of pharmacies exceed annual revenues of 2.5 million dirhams. This disparity in revenue generation raises questions about the sustainability and effectiveness of the current distribution model and points to the need for reform in the sector.
