Revolutionizing Moroccan Rail: High-Speed Connections by 2030

Transforming Rail Travel in Morocco

The Moroccan Minister of Transport, Abdessamad Kayouh, has unveiled ambitious plans for the future of the country's rail system. By the year 2030, a high-speed train line will connect Kenitra to Marrakech, reducing travel time from the current six hours to just two and a half. This transformative project is set to radically enhance national mobility and accessibility.

The expansion of the rail network will provide unprecedented connectivity to Mohammed V Airport in Casablanca, which will be only 35 minutes away from the capital, Rabat, and just 55 minutes from Marrakech. Additionally, for travelers coming from Tangier, the journey to this key airport hub will be cut down to one hour and 35 minutes, showcasing the positive impact this project will have on travel efficiency across the country.

Strategic Developments and Future Prospects

The strategic initiative linking Marrakech to Agadir has reached a significant milestone with the completion of final studies. This 240-kilometer stretch of rail, projected to cost between 50 and 56 billion dirhams, will allow passengers to travel between the two cities in just one hour. As confirmed by the Minister, execution studies for this monumental project are already complete, paving the way for its realization.

Furthermore, plans are underway to improve rail access to Essaouira, a coastal city that will be connected to Marrakech in just one hour. The connection between Agadir and Essaouira, via Chichaoua, is expected to take one hour and 22 minutes, significantly enhancing regional connectivity in preparation for the important deadlines set for 2030.

This rapid expansion of Morocco’s rail network is not just a logistical upgrade; it represents a commitment to regional development and economic growth. The national railway office (ONCF) is actively preparing for the integration of new high-speed services to further support these initiatives, thereby unlocking the potential of various regions and facilitating smoother travel.
