Rising Popularity of Morocco Among Russian Tourists Amid Middle East Tensions

The regional and international repercussions of the ongoing conflict between Iran and Israel, along with support from Washington, have led Russian tourists to reconsider their traditional travel options, particularly in the Gulf states. As a result, there has been a noticeable shift towards Morocco, which combines a rich cultural experience with relaxation opportunities. This trend has been highlighted by data from tourism companies in Russia, indicating a significant increase in demand for travel and bookings to Morocco.

Travel agency executives in Russia have reported, via specialized Russian tourism websites, that the landscape of international tourism for Russians has rapidly shifted following the crisis in the Middle East. Morocco has emerged as a leading alternative destination, particularly the city of Marrakech, which has seen a surge in interest and an increase in the number of flights to this popular locale.

In response to the rising demand for Moroccan travel, airlines have increased the frequency of flights to Marrakech and Agadir by 10 to 20 percent compared to usual operations, while also opening new routes through intermediary destinations. This development is expected to enhance competition and potentially lower airfare prices to Morocco.

According to the Russian tourism site “Tourprom,” Morocco is not the only destination attracting Russian tourists in the wake of the Middle East conflict; other locations like the Dominican Republic and Mauritius have also gained attention. However, Morocco maintains its leading position due to several favorable factors, including safety, a mild climate, and a rich cultural heritage.

The Russian Association of Tour Operators has confirmed that Morocco remains a favored destination for Russian tourists this year, despite the fact that it is not marketed as aggressively in the Russian travel market compared to Turkey, Egypt, or the UAE. The association noted in a statement that demand for Moroccan travel has doubled among certain travel agencies and tour companies in Russia.

According to “Rossiyskiy Express,” citing insights from Russian professionals, Agadir has accounted for over 71 percent of total summer bookings this year, followed closely by Casablanca and Marrakech. The site also noted a slight increase in the prices of tours in Morocco due to the higher costs associated with hiring Russian-speaking tour guides.

Furthermore, bookings for four-star hotels in Agadir represented about 71 percent of the total bookings, compared to 75 percent from the previous year, while five-star hotels captured approximately 29 percent of reservations.

It is important to highlight that Russian Transport Minister Andrei Nikitin previously stated that regular flights between Russia and Middle Eastern countries would resume once conditions in the region are deemed safe for air travel. He emphasized that the Russian side maintains continuous communication with the aviation authorities of the Middle Eastern nations and is prepared to reinstate flights quickly upon confirmation of complete safety in the skies, as stable conditions remain a prerequisite for the resumption of air transport.

The Russian aviation authority has implemented a series of restrictions on air traffic in the airspace of countries involved in the conflict, which has been extended until March 27 of this year. This includes a ban on Russian airlines flying over Israeli and Iranian airspace, including transit routes.
