Rail Safety Concerns: A Rise in Near-Miss Incidents
Recent statistics from Banedanmark reveal a troubling trend as more individuals are choosing to ignore safety barriers and warning signals at railway crossings. The organization has reported a significant increase in near-miss incidents, highlighting a growing disregard for safety protocols among pedestrians and cyclists. For instance, in the previous year, the Lille Syd line, connecting Roskilde and Næstved via Køge, recorded 49 near-miss events, while the Nærumbanen line, running between Jægersborg and Nærum, reported an even higher count of 67 incidents, marking it as the most affected line.
Nationally, the number of near-miss incidents at crossings overseen by Banedanmark surged from 323 in 2024 to 471 in 2025, representing a staggering 46 percent increase. Martin Harrow, the safety chief at Banedanmark, emphasized the dangers involved, stating, "Every time a road user decides to ignore the signals, the risk of an accident escalates significantly, as trains have long stopping distances and cannot swerve to avoid someone on the tracks."
