RNI Selects Taha El Joumani for Challenging Rabat Constituency
In a significant move ahead of the upcoming legislative elections scheduled for September 2026, the Rassemblement National des Indépendants (RNI), Morocco's leading party in the governing coalition, has officially endorsed Taha El Joumani as its candidate to lead the electoral list in the fiercely contested Ocean constituency in Rabat. This district has earned the moniker "death constituency" due to the high-profile nature of its candidates and the intense competition that it typically attracts. El Joumani will be up against several prominent figures in Moroccan politics, including former Minister Mustapha El Khalfi, socialist leader Abdelkrim Benatiq, and current Minister of Youth, Culture, and Communication, Mehdi Bensaid. In addition to these well-known candidates, Nabil Dakhch, a businessman and member of the Popular Movement, is also expected to compete for a seat in this vital constituency.
Multiple sources have confirmed that the RNI has opted not to re-nominate Saïd Benbarek, who previously held this position, although he will continue to serve as the regional coordinator for the party in the Rabat-Salé-Kénitra region. Taha El Joumani, who holds a degree in political science and has experience in the business sector, represents the new generation of candidates that the RNI aims to promote. Notably, he is the grandson of the late Haj Khatri Saïd Ould Joumani, a historical figure from the southern provinces and a former president of the Jemâa in Laâyoune. His selection is part of the party's broader strategy to rejuvenate its political elite in anticipation of the electoral challenges ahead.
