Royal Air Maroc Halts Several European and African Routes
In a significant move affecting travelers between Belgium and Morocco, Royal Air Maroc has announced the temporary suspension of several flights to European and African destinations, including the vital route between Marrakech and Brussels. This decision stems from soaring fuel prices, exacerbated by geopolitical tensions in the Middle East, alongside a noticeable decline in passenger demand on certain routes. The airline's announcement, made on Saturday, highlights the direct impact that the ongoing conflict in the region has had on operational costs, forcing the airline to adapt its international network accordingly.
The specific routes affected include not only flights from Marrakech to Brussels but also to other major French cities such as Marseille, Lyon, and Bordeaux. Additionally, the connections from Tanger to Spain, specifically Barcelona and Malaga, will also be temporarily halted. Furthermore, travelers from Casablanca will find it impossible to reach several key destinations in Central and West Africa, including Bangui in the Central African Republic and Douala and Yaoundé in Cameroon.
Temporary Measures Amid Ongoing Monitoring
Royal Air Maroc is closely monitoring the evolving international situation and has committed to gradually reinstating these services as soon as operational and economic conditions allow. The airline, which is over 98% state-owned, is currently in the midst of an ambitious growth program that aims to expand its fleet from 50 aircraft to 200 by 2037. This strategic expansion underscores the airline's long-term vision, even as it navigates the short-term challenges posed by the current fuel price crisis.
The recent surge in fuel prices, particularly for aviation, has been attributed to the ongoing war in the Middle East and the closure of the Strait of Hormuz, a crucial transit route for 20% of Europe's oil supply prior to the conflict. This situation has raised concerns about potential fuel shortages during the summer travel season. Consequently, several low-cost airlines have announced flight cancellations in response to these challenges.
