Royal Air Maroc's Vision for an Open African Airspace

PUBLISHED June 18, 2026
Royal Air Maroc's Vision for an Open African Airspace

The Moroccan flagship airline, Royal Air Maroc, is aiming to become a leader in establishing an interconnected and open African airspace, facilitating global access to the continent's skies. As Morocco seeks to position itself as a pivotal economic hub between Africa and Europe, Royal Air Maroc is taking significant steps to enhance air connectivity not just within Africa but also with the rest of the world.

Recently, this ambitious vision was highlighted during the African Air Transport Convention and Exhibition (AFCAC 2026) held in Lomé, Togo. During a panel discussion at this continental convention, the airline's President and CEO, Abdelhamid Addou, expressed the aspirations of Royal Air Maroc to be a frontrunner in creating an open and interconnected African airspace. He emphasized the necessity of dismantling existing barriers within African airspace and prioritizing the promotion of openness and connectivity as essential goals.

According to Addou, African air transport continues to be hindered by regulatory and financial obstacles, including traffic rights, which are bilateral or multilateral permissions granted by countries to international airlines to operate within their airspace. He views the AFCAC Expo 2026 as an opportunity to advocate for the harmonization of regulations and the reduction of excessive taxes to boost air connectivity among African nations. The airline proposes establishing a continental network centered around the strategic hub of Casablanca to facilitate inter-African exchanges and stimulate continental economic integration.

Royal Air Maroc: A Key Connector Between Continents

At present, Royal Air Maroc stands out as a crucial player in connecting the African continent with Europe and the Americas. The airline plays a vital role in achieving the objectives of the Single African Air Transport Market (SAATM), establishing itself as a central actor in South-South cooperation and a key vector for regional economic integration and the fluidity of exchanges within the continent. With over 80 weekly flights linking its operational hub in Casablanca to 40 cities across a dozen European countries, the airline also dominates as the leading African operator for flights to the Americas, serving five major destinations: New York, Washington D.C., Miami (United States), Montreal (Canada), and São Paulo (Brazil).

Royal Air Maroc's Role in the Marhaba Operation

Additionally, Royal Air Maroc plays a significant role in the annual Marhaba Operation, which takes place from mid-June to mid-September. For the summer of 2026, the airline has added four additional aircraft to its regular fleet, allowing it to offer a total capacity of 6.6 million seats throughout the summer campaign. To accommodate the surge in demand from Moroccans residing abroad who return home for summer vacations, Royal Air Maroc has enhanced its services, expected to manage part of the traffic from over 3.5 million passengers anticipated to cross the Strait of Gibraltar this summer.

Royal Air Maroc will operate more than 80 weekly flights from major Spanish airports, providing direct connections to Moroccan destinations such as Casablanca, Tangier, Nador, and Tetouan. For the most in-demand air connections, the airline will deploy its long-haul aircraft, including the Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner.
