RSHP Triumphs in Designing Casablanca's New Airport Terminal

RSHP Secures Prestigious Airport Project in Casablanca

The renowned London-based architectural firm Rogers Stirk Harbour + Partners (RSHP), in collaboration with Moroccan design studio ALA Concept and French engineering powerhouse Egis, has been awarded the coveted contract for the design of a new terminal at Casablanca’s Mohammed V International Airport. This significant project, valued at $1.2 billion, aims to enhance the airport's capacity in response to the increasing demand for air travel and to support the ambitious development strategies of Royal Air Maroc. The announcement, highlighted by the UK’s Architecture Journal, marks a critical step in the airport's evolution, with the new terminal expected to be operational by 2029, just in time for the 2030 FIFA World Cup.

Innovative Design Reflecting Local Culture and Environment

The design of the new terminal is characterized by its H-shaped structure, which not only caters to functionality but also embraces the aesthetic qualities inspired by the surrounding Atlantic waves. This innovative architecture incorporates a modular system aimed at facilitating rapid construction, ensuring that the project progresses efficiently and meets its deadline. Spanning three main levels, the terminal will seamlessly integrate with Morocco’s high-speed rail network, thereby enhancing connectivity from Kenitra to Marrakech. Additionally, the terminal will host vibrant retail areas, expansive ‘green oases’ for relaxation, and an on-site airport hotel, creating a holistic travel experience for passengers.

Ivan Harbour, the senior design director at RSHP, expressed enthusiasm regarding the project, stating, "We are delighted and excited to be involved in this venture. The terminal will be a remarkable structure of global significance, drawing inspiration from the dynamic waves of the Atlantic. Our design will embody the spirit and culture of Casablanca, creating an inviting atmosphere for travelers. It is envisioned as a state-of-the-art facility that celebrates light and warmth while providing a memorable journey through its spaces, which range from grand central areas to intimate, calming retreats. This building will serve as a graceful gateway between Casablanca and the wider world." A joint venture led by Morocco’s prominent contractors, SGTM and TGCC, has been tasked with the construction of this ambitious project, furthering Morocco's commitment to modernizing its infrastructure and enhancing its global presence.
