Ruy Barbosa's Triumphant Return to Rally-Raid Competition
The renowned Chilean driver, Ruy Barbosa, is gearing up for his official comeback to the Rally-Raid circuit as he prepares to participate in the fourth round of the World Championship (W2RC), known as the Rally of Morocco. This event, set to take place from September 28 to October 3, marks a significant milestone in Barbosa's journey as he returns to competitive racing following a serious accident during the last Dakar Rally, coupled with several months dedicated to recovery.
Morocco presents a unique opportunity for Barbosa, as the terrain closely resembles that of the upcoming Dakar Rally, making it an ideal setting for him to hone his skills and showcase his abilities. This race isn't just another competition; it serves as his first major test since receiving medical clearance to return to racing. Barbosa is determined to use this event as a stepping stone toward his ultimate goal: a triumphant comeback at the Dakar 2027.
Barbosa's journey in motorsport took a transformative turn at the beginning of 2026. After achieving notable success in Enduro, he made a pivotal leap into the Rally-Raid arena, competing in his inaugural Dakar. His debut performance exceeded expectations, as he steadily climbed the ranks and adapted to the new challenges presented by the Rally2 category. Unfortunately, his promising run came to an abrupt halt due to an accident in the tenth stage, leading to a shoulder injury that required surgical intervention upon his return to Chile.
Since the incident, Barbosa has embarked on a rigorous recovery process with a clear objective: to return to competition as soon as possible and do so in a manner that would allow him to once again vie for top positions. Following his medical clearance, he gradually resumed training, recently relocating to northern Chile to accumulate crucial kilometers, regain his racing instincts, and specifically prepare for the demanding conditions he will encounter in the Moroccan desert.
"I am incredibly happy to be back. The past months have been lengthy, but they were also filled with hard work aimed at ensuring a solid recovery. Since I received the green light, my focus has been singular: to return to competition and demonstrate my capabilities on the bike," expressed Barbosa.
However, the Rally of Morocco will not be without its challenges. The event’s navigation, variable terrains, long stages, and unique Rally-Raid conditions will immediately test Barbosa's physical and competitive readiness. Rather than approaching this return with caution, Barbosa brings with him the ambition that has characterized his career. "I am not returning just to finish the race; I want to be back in the fight for top positions. Of course, after so many months, there are aspects I need to regain, but I am fully aware of my capabilities and what I can achieve when I’m on the bike," he affirmed.
This event is also pivotal as part of a larger strategy, with the Dakar 2027 firmly in his sights. Every kilometer in this next chapter will serve as preparation for what is known as the toughest race in the world, this time enriched by the experience gained from his first participation. "The next Dakar will be different. I will arrive with more experience, enhanced determination, and a much clearer mindset compared to last year’s edition. My objective will be to finish the race no matter what, with the outcome being a natural result of my efforts to achieve that. Regardless, I aim to deliver a strong performance and, who knows, possibly place among the best," concluded Barbosa.
The 2026 accident interrupted what seemed to be a promising trajectory towards one of the best finishes for a Chilean in their Dakar debut. Now, Ruy Barbosa returns to Morocco to continue that journey, for the story did not end in the desert; it merely went on pause.
