Occupied El Aaiún, September 21, 2026 (SPS) – The League for the Protection of Sahrawi Prisoners in Moroccan Occupation Prisons has announced that Sahrawi civilian prisoner Mohamed Bourial, a member of the Gdeim Izik group, will commence a 48-hour warning hunger strike starting Tuesday at Ait Melloul Prison in Morocco. This action is a direct response to the ongoing neglect of his legitimate legal demands and the prison administration's refusal to address these issues with the seriousness they warrant.
The decision to undertake a warning hunger strike is particularly poignant given the severe conditions Mohamed Bourial has been subjected to, which have only worsened due to the isolation he has faced since 2017. For nearly a decade, he has been cut off from not only his fellow prisoners but also denied family visits and stripped of fundamental rights that are safeguarded by international human rights law.
Family members of the imprisoned Sahrawi have reported that his demands are rooted in calls for the implementation of recommendations from the UN Working Group on Arbitrary Detention and the Committee against Torture. He is seeking immediate release alongside his fellow Gdeim Izik group members, an end to his isolation, and the restoration of his rights to family visits, telephone communication, and closer proximity to his family in the occupied city of El Aaiún.
Should the Moroccan prison authorities continue to ignore his legitimate demands, Mohamed Bourial has indicated that he will escalate his hunger strike until his conditions are addressed and his rights are restored.
