Sahrawi Community Marches for Self-Determination on France's National Day

Solidarity in Paris for Sahrawi Rights

On July 14, 2026, the Sahrawi community in Paris and its neighboring suburbs actively participated in the annual civic march held in the French capital to commemorate France's National Day. This significant event saw the convergence of 86 French non-governmental organizations, all united in their advocacy for the Sahrawi people's right to self-determination. The participants aimed to raise awareness among the French public regarding the distressing conditions faced by Sahrawi political prisoners currently incarcerated in Moroccan prisons.

The march commenced at Place de la Bastille and concluded at Place de la République, with Sahrawi community members proudly displaying their national flags and carrying photographs of political prisoners from the Gdeim Izik Group. Through the distribution of banners and leaflets, as well as powerful speeches representing both the Sahrawi community and its women, the participants reiterated their urgent calls for the immediate release of all Sahrawi political prisoners, emphasizing the need to honor the Sahrawi people's inherent right to self-determination and independence.

Highlighting Health Concerns of Political Prisoners

This large public gathering served as a crucial platform for the Sahrawi community to draw attention to the deteriorating health of Naâma Asfari, a member of the Gdeim Izik Group who has been unjustly imprisoned in Moroccan facilities for over 15 years. The participants expressed their outrage at the harsh conditions of his detention and voiced their deep concerns regarding the severe health risks he faces due to his ongoing hunger strike. Asfari is bravely protesting to demand respect for his fundamental rights and adherence to the recommendations made by United Nations human rights mechanisms, which call for the release of Sahrawi political prisoners.

Representatives from the Sahrawi community underscored that Naâma Asfari's situation represents the broader plight of all Sahrawi political prisoners. They highlighted the systemic injustices these individuals face, including unfair trials, torture, ill-treatment, and arbitrary detention, all stemming from their peaceful advocacy for the Sahrawi people's right to self-determination.
