SAL's Orca-Class Vessel Achieves Milestone Delivery

The maritime logistics industry witnessed a significant achievement as SAL's newly constructed Orca-class vessel, named Patricia, successfully completed the delivery of a rail-mounted Liebherr LPS 550 crane to Marsa Maroc in Casablanca. This landmark event marks the first deployment of the LPS 550 crane in Africa, showcasing SAL's commitment to enhancing the operational capabilities of terminal operators across the continent.

Marsa Maroc, a vital player in Morocco's port sector since its establishment during the country's port reforms in 2006, now oversees 35 terminals across 21 ports, managing an impressive cargo throughput of approximately 67 million tonnes annually. The delivery of this advanced crane is anticipated to significantly bolster the operational efficiency and cargo handling capabilities at their facilities.

The LPS 550 crane was carefully loaded onto the Patricia at Liebherr's manufacturing facility located in Rostock, Germany. SAL, which officially named the vessel in June 2026, also utilized the Patricia to transport an LHM 800 mobile harbour crane destined for Luanda, Angola, highlighting the vessel's versatility and capacity in handling diverse heavy lift cargoes.

This successful delivery not only underscores SAL's operational excellence but also represents a pivotal moment for heavy lift logistics in Africa. The strategic deployment of the LPS 550 crane is expected to set new benchmarks for efficiency and productivity in the region's port operations.
