São Tomé and Príncipe's Endorsement of Morocco’s Autonomy Plan
The island nation of São Tomé and Príncipe has reiterated its strong support for Morocco's sovereignty over the Sahara, characterizing the autonomy plan proposed by Morocco as the most viable resolution to the protracted dispute in the region. In an official statement released on April 14, the government of São Tomé and Príncipe articulated its 'steadfast position in support of the Moroccan claim to the Sahara and the autonomy plan under Moroccan authority as the sole solution to this ongoing regional conflict.'
This declaration was made by Ilza Maria dos Santos Amado Vaz, the Minister of State for Foreign Affairs, Cooperation, and Communities of São Tomé and Príncipe, following her discussions in Rabat with Moroccan Foreign Minister Nasser Bourita. Minister Vaz expressed her country’s unwavering commitment to Morocco's territorial integrity, emphasizing support for the nation's sovereignty over its entire territory, including the Sahara region.
Moreover, Minister Vaz provided her full endorsement of Morocco’s autonomy proposal, labeling it as 'the only credible and realistic solution for effectively resolving this regional dispute.' Her comments also highlighted the significance of the United Nations Security Council Resolution 2797 (2025), which endorses the autonomy plan as a 'serious, credible, and sustainable foundation' for achieving a political settlement within the framework of Moroccan sovereignty.
In addition to affirming its political support, São Tomé and Príncipe acknowledged Morocco's development initiatives in the southern provinces. The nation praised the progress made under Morocco's New Development Model, which aims to foster stability, security, and regional integration. This reaffirmed position not only strengthens bilateral relations between the two nations but also aligns with what officials describe as a burgeoning international consensus in favor of Morocco's stance, bolstered by the diplomatic efforts spearheaded by King Mohammed VI.
