São Tomé and Príncipe's Firm Stance on Moroccan Sovereignty
In a significant diplomatic gesture, the Republic of São Tomé and Príncipe has reiterated its unwavering support for Morocco's claim over the Sahara region. This affirmation came during a press statement made by Ilza Maria dos Santos Amado Vaz, the Minister of State for Foreign Affairs, Cooperation, and Communities of São Tomé and Príncipe, following her discussions with Morocco's Minister of Foreign Affairs, African Cooperation, and Moroccan Expatriates, Nasser Bourita, in Rabat. Minister Vaz emphasized her country's steadfast position regarding Morocco's territorial integrity and sovereignty, declaring that the autonomy plan proposed by Morocco represents the only viable solution to the ongoing regional dispute.
During her visit, Vaz highlighted the importance of the recently adopted UN Security Council Resolution 2797, which endorses Morocco's autonomy plan as a credible and realistic framework for achieving a political solution to the Sahara issue. This resolution marks a crucial step in recognizing the legitimacy of Morocco's approach towards regional stability and development. Furthermore, she commended the substantial advancements made by Morocco in the socio-economic development of the Southern Provinces, attributed to the New Development Model initiated by the Kingdom. This model not only fosters economic growth but also promotes stability, security, and integration within the region.
São Tomé and Príncipe's position, as reiterated by Minister Vaz, reflects a broader international consensus that has been building momentum, largely due to the proactive diplomatic efforts of His Majesty King Mohammed VI. The Kingdom's initiative in promoting the autonomy plan underscores its commitment to resolving the Sahara dispute while ensuring respect for its sovereignty. Such endorsements from international partners like São Tomé and Príncipe further solidify Morocco's stance in the quest for a lasting resolution to this longstanding regional challenge.
