Search and Rescue Efforts Underway for Missing U.S. Service Members in Morocco

In a developing situation, two U.S. service members have gone missing in southwestern Morocco following a multinational military exercise, prompting an extensive search-and-rescue operation involving both U.S. and allied forces. According to officials, the incident occurred on May 2 at the Cap Draa Training Area, which is located near the city of Tan Tan, approximately 15 miles from the Atlantic coast. The United States Africa Command (AFRICOM) has confirmed that the search is currently ongoing and remains under investigation, emphasizing that the operation is utilizing ground, air, and maritime assets to locate the missing personnel.

The military exercise, named African Lion, is the largest annual military exercise conducted by the U.S. in Africa and has been taking place since April. This year marks the 20th edition of African Lion, which spans across four countries, including Tunisia, Ghana, and Senegal, and is set to conclude in early May. The primary objective of these multinational drills is to bolster security partnerships and enhance troop readiness in preparation for potential global crises. The exercise serves as a platform for senior commanders from the U.S. and its regional allies to collaborate and strengthen their operational capabilities.

As this situation unfolds, updates will be provided as more information becomes available. The Associated Press has also contributed to this report.
