Search and Rescue Underway for Two Missing U.S. Service Members in Morocco

U.S. Service Members Go Missing During Military Exercises in Morocco

In a developing situation from southwestern Morocco, two U.S. service members have been reported missing following their involvement in the annual multinational military exercises known as African Lion. This incident, which occurred on the evening of May 2, 2026, was confirmed by the United States Africa Command (AFRICOM), prompting a swift response that has initiated search and rescue operations in collaboration with Moroccan military forces.

The missing personnel were part of a larger contingent participating in the African Lion exercise, which involves over 7,000 military personnel from more than 30 nations across various locations, including Tunisia, Ghana, and Senegal. This major military engagement aims to enhance regional security cooperation and improve the preparedness of participating forces for potential global crises. The exercise began in April and is scheduled to conclude in early May. Notably, it represents one of the largest annual joint military drills conducted by the U.S. on the African continent since its inception in 2004.

The Moroccan military has detailed that the incident transpired near the Cap Draa Training Area close to Tan Tan, a region characterized by its challenging mountainous terrain and semidesert landscapes. AFRICOM has stated that the search efforts are ongoing and that the incident remains under investigation. However, as of now, there has been no information released regarding the specific military branch or unit to which the missing service members belong. The Associated Press has sought further clarification on this matter.

This is not the first time the African Lion exercises have been marred by tragedy. A similar incident occurred in 2012 when two U.S. Marines lost their lives in a helicopter crash in Agadir, Morocco, during the same training exercises. Against a backdrop of geopolitical instability in the region, where military coups have recently disrupted governance in neighboring countries such as Mali, Burkina Faso, and Niger, Morocco continues to stand as a key ally of the United States.
