Search Operations for Missing US Soldiers in Morocco
The disappearance of two American military personnel during international exercises in Morocco has triggered a significant search operation along the country's southern coast. The soldiers were participating in "African Lion 2026," the largest military maneuvers organized annually by the United States in Africa. According to the United States Africa Command (AFRICOM), the two soldiers were reported missing on Saturday night in a training area located at Cap Draa, near the city of Tan-Tan in southern Morocco.
The alert was activated promptly after contact with the soldiers was lost. Following this, U.S. and Moroccan forces, along with other teams deployed for the maneuvers, launched a joint search and rescue operation utilizing land, sea, and air resources. AFRICOM emphasized in a statement released Sunday that "our priority is the service members involved and their families." The "African Lion 2026" exercises commenced on April 20 and are scheduled to continue until May 8 at various locations throughout Morocco, including Agadir, Tan-Tan, Benguerir, Taroudant, Tifnit, and Dakhla. This year, the maneuvers bring together more than 40 countries and are regarded as the largest multinational military training exercise that the United States conducts on the African continent. The exercises involve ground troops, air units, and naval forces, along with joint coordination tasks and special operations.
