Senegal Accuses African Football Confederation of Corruption Following Africa Cup Title Controversy

The aftermath of the controversial revocation of Senegal's Africa Cup title has led to serious allegations against the African Football Confederation (CAF). Patrice Motsepe, the president of the CAF, has firmly defended the integrity of the organization, stating in a video message on the federation's website that, "No single country in Africa is favored or treated more favorably than another on the continent." Motsepe emphasized that the CAF takes the events that unfolded during the final match in Morocco very seriously.

During the closing moments of the final, chaos erupted following a penalty decision, leading to Senegal's players almost entirely vacating the field in protest before later returning. Consequently, the CAF's Appeals Court annulled Senegal's victory over Morocco (1-0 after extra time) and awarded the title to Morocco, the host nation.

In response to this decision, the Senegalese government has demanded corruption investigations against the CAF and has announced its intention to appeal to the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS). Motsepe acknowledged the gravity of the situation, stating, "We will respect the decision made at the highest level." He views the incidents surrounding the final in January as a setback for African football, asserting that, "What occurred in this final undermines the significant work that the CAF has done over many years to uphold integrity, respect, ethical standards, good governance, and the credibility of our football results."

Motsepe further noted that the continued allegations of corruption stem from longstanding issues that have persisted for many years, requiring ongoing efforts to address them, as they are of crucial importance to the sport.

The Appeals Court justified its decision based on Article 82 of the Africa Cup regulations, which states that Senegal's team effectively forfeited the match by leaving the pitch. According to Article 84, the result was deemed a 3-0 victory for Morocco.
