Senegal's Stance on the CAF Dispute
In a recent statement, Abdoulaye Fall, the President of the Senegalese Football Federation, asserted that there is no legal jeopardy regarding the victory of the Senegalese national team in the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON). This declaration comes in light of a ruling by the Confederation of African Football's (CAF) Appeals Committee, which controversially declared Morocco the winner of the final match by a score of 3-0, citing Senegal's withdrawal as a reason for their loss. Fall expressed confidence in the legal standing of Senegal's title, emphasizing that the federation has submitted an appeal to the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS). "We have received the details of the Appeals Committee's decision, which we anticipated, and I am very reassured because legally, the title cannot be stripped from Senegal," he stated.
Fall elaborated on the Moroccan side's requests throughout this dispute, which included formally recognizing Senegal's withdrawal, declaring them the loser, revoking their continental title, and demanding the return of the trophy and medals. However, the Appeals Committee only acknowledged the partial request to consider Senegal as having lost the match while rejecting the requests to strip the title and reclaim the trophy and rewards, citing a lack of jurisdiction over these matters. On the other hand, Fouzi Lekjaa, the president of the Moroccan Football Federation, recently asserted that Morocco possesses a "comprehensive and robust" case to defend its claim to the AFCON title.
