Senegalese Star Édouard Mendy Faces Setback in Roshen League

Édouard Mendy's Challenging Season

Senegalese goalkeeper Édouard Mendy, currently playing for Al-Ahli, has encountered yet another setback this season after conceding a goal against Al-Fayha during the 29th round of the Roshen League. This latest development poses a significant challenge for Mendy as he strives to lead Al-Ahli to its first league title in several years. The current season has proven to be fiercely competitive, with teams like Al-Hilal, Al-Nassr, and Al-Qadsia vying for the championship, making Al-Ahli's quest for glory increasingly difficult.

Controversy and Records in Focus

The first setback for Mendy this season occurred when the Confederation of African Football (CAF) controversially stripped Senegal of the Africa Cup of Nations title, awarding it to Morocco instead. Just months prior, Senegal had claimed victory in the final held in Morocco, defeating the hosts 1-0. Following this disputed decision, Senegal attempted to retract its initial request, but Morocco had already lodged a complaint that CAF accepted. This led to a further escalation of tensions between Senegal and Morocco, with Mendy at the center of the narrative as his nation continued to provoke Morocco with references to the Teranga Cup and his own performance.

In addition to the controversy, Mendy had aspirations of becoming the goalkeeper with the fewest goals conceded in a single season of the Roshen League. However, the unexpected goal conceded against Al-Fayha interrupted his impressive run. Before this match, he had gone 12 matches without conceding a goal and needed to maintain a clean sheet in the remaining seven games to surpass the record of 18 matches held by Brazilian Marcelo Grohe. Grohe, who played for Al-Ittihad, still holds the record, but Mendy has the opportunity to match it if he can keep his net untouched in the upcoming six fixtures.

Mendy joined Al-Ahli in the summer of 2023 from Chelsea and has already made a significant impact, helping his team capture the AFC Champions League and the national Super Cup. Throughout his tenure, he has played 106 matches, conceding 103 goals, and has managed to keep a clean sheet 47 times.
