Severe Heatwave and Thunderstorm Warnings Across Morocco
On Thursday, July 30, 2026, the General Directorate of Meteorology issued a stern warning regarding an intense heatwave set to impact numerous regions across Morocco from today until Saturday. The forecast indicates that temperatures could spike to a staggering 47 degrees Celsius, accompanied by localized thunderstorms and strong winds in several provinces. This alarming prediction has prompted officials to issue an orange alert in anticipation of the extreme weather conditions.
According to the updated advisory, the highest temperatures, expected to range between 45 and 47 degrees, are likely to occur in the provinces of Oued Ed-Dahab, Boujdour, Assa-Zag, Smara, Taroudant, Tata, Zagora, Errachidia, and Oussred, between Thursday and Saturday. Moreover, other regions including Fquih Ben Salah, Kelaa des Sraghna, Beni Mellal, Agadir Ida Ou Tanane, Marrakech, Rhamna, Youssoufia, Khénifra, Taounate, and several others are projected to experience temperatures between 42 and 45 degrees during this period.
Additionally, the meteorological agency anticipates extremely hot weather on Thursday and Friday, with temperatures hitting 42 to 45 degrees in the provinces of Laayoune, Tarfaya, Guelmim, and Tan-Tan, while the coastal areas of Essaouira, Tiznit, and Sidi Ifni are expected to see temperatures ranging from 39 to 42 degrees. The heatwave is expected to extend to the provinces of Sidi Slimane, Benslimane, Khémisset, Safi, and others on Friday and Saturday, where temperatures will be between 40 and 45 degrees.
In conjunction with the heatwave, the meteorological service warns of potential thunderstorms that could yield rainfall between 15 and 20 millimeters, possibly accompanied by hail and gusty winds. These storms are expected to occur in regions such as Khénifra, Figuig, Rhamna, and Khouribga today, from 2 PM until 10 PM. The public is urged to exercise caution, particularly in areas highlighted in the advisory, due to the significant rise in temperatures and the anticipated weather fluctuations.
