Intense Heatwave and Wind Conditions in Morocco
Rabat, June 2 (EFE) - An intense heatwave, accompanied by strong gusts of wind, is set to impact a significant portion of Morocco this week, with temperatures soaring to extreme levels ranging from 40 to 44 degrees Celsius in the southern and southeastern regions, as reported by the General Directorate of Meteorology (DGM) of the North African country. The atmospheric conditions in the interior regions are expected to fluctuate between 35 and 40 degrees Celsius, while coastal areas will benefit from a refreshing sea breeze, resulting in more moderate temperatures.
This meteorological phenomenon is further intensified by a strong windstorm that has disrupted sea conditions, prompting authorities to impose bathing restrictions along nearly the entire Atlantic coastline for Tuesday and Wednesday. Beaches in the southern region, including Mirleft, El Ouatia, and Tarfaya, are displaying black flags indicating a complete ban due to extreme danger. Meanwhile, the sands of Agadir, Essaouira, and Casablanca are marked with red flags, leaving the northern coast as the sole area with yellow flags signaling caution.
In addition to the heat, authorities are anticipating thunderstorms and localized rain showers in the High Atlas regions, along with strong winds that could stir up dust in the interior and southern areas. Forecasts indicate that high temperatures are expected to rise again in the northern and central regions as the weekend approaches. Morocco has been experiencing consecutive heatwaves throughout May under orange alerts, and it now enters June facing a similar situation with active yellow warnings.
