Severe Weather Conditions Predicted for Multiple Provinces
Morocco is bracing for a significant weather event as the General Directorate of Meteorology (DGM) has issued a warning regarding strong thunderstorms anticipated to impact numerous provinces on Tuesday and Wednesday. This weather alert indicates the potential for thundery rainfall, with accumulations expected to reach between 30 and 40 millimeters, particularly on Tuesday morning, extending until 8 a.m. The provinces most likely to experience these adverse conditions include M’diq-Fnideq, Tangier-Assilah, Ouezzane, Al Hoceima, Larache, Fahs-Anjra, Chefchaouen, and Tetouan.
Impact of Recent Weather Changes on Agriculture and Water Resources
In addition to rain, the DGM forecasts strong winds, which may reach speeds between 80 to 100 kilometers per hour, particularly on Wednesday from noon until 9 p.m. in the provinces of Boulemane, Azilal, Ouarzazate, Midelt, and Tinghir. This shift in weather patterns comes after a prolonged period of stable and sunny conditions that had graced the nation. Notably, from mid-November 2025 to February 2026, Morocco experienced heavy rainfall that significantly affected various regions, replenishing water reserves and revitalizing an agricultural sector that had been beleaguered by seven years of drought. However, the intense rainfall also led to flooding in numerous cities, prompting authorities to evacuate areas deemed disaster zones.
As of now, Morocco's dams are reported to be filled to 74.6%, a significant increase from the 38.37% level recorded during the same period last year. The current water volume stands at approximately 12.83 million cubic meters, illustrating a positive trend for the country's water management initiatives.
