Severe Weather Alert: New Thunderstorms Expected Between the Iberian Peninsula and Northern Maghreb

Severe Weather Conditions Forecasted

Starting Tuesday, a cold drop situated over the Atlantic Ocean near Portugal is set to disrupt weather patterns across Spain and Morocco. As the week progresses, significant thunderstorms are anticipated, leading to potential flooding and flash floods in affected regions. This adverse weather is tied to a deepening depression that is moving westward, creating a moist airflow from the Atlantic, which will interact with warm air aloft, fostering considerable instability and resulting in heavy, prolonged thunderstorms.

Regions Affected and Expected Rainfall Totals

Portugal is expected to be the first nation to experience these intense rain showers, particularly on Tuesday, with predicted rainfall ranging from 40 to 100 mm over a 48-hour period. In elevated areas, totals may exceed 100 mm. Following this, the thunderstorms will shift west and southward into Spain, with regions in Andalusia possibly receiving between 100 to 150 mm of rain. Meanwhile, Morocco, especially along its western coastline and in the Tangier-Tetouan region, could see rainfall totals reaching up to 120 mm by Thursday. The persistent nature of these storms combined with already saturated soils from previous winter storms increases the risk of rapid flooding in small basins and overflowing rivers, as well as urban runoff during peak storm intensity. Furthermore, significant rainfall could trigger landslides in hilly areas.

As the week progresses, the depression is likely to move slowly eastward towards the western Mediterranean, leading to more thunderstorms between Spain and northern Maghreb, particularly from northern Morocco to Tunisia. This situation warrants close monitoring, as substantial rainfall could occur over a brief period.
