Disruption of Maritime Links Due to Adverse Weather Conditions
Maritime operations connecting the port of Tarifa in Cádiz to Tangier City have been suspended as of Friday, March 20, 2026, due to unfavorable weather conditions prevailing in the Strait of Gibraltar. According to the port authorities of the Bay of Algeciras, both Balearia and Africa Morocco Link (AML) have canceled all ferry crossings planned for the day. The abrupt halt in services is attributed primarily to strong winds and rough seas affecting the strait. Originally, the port had been closed on Thursday at 4 PM, and it will remain shut throughout Friday.
As a result of this suspension, there are no ferry departures scheduled from Tarifa, and several crossings originally set for Saturday morning have also been canceled. In contrast, ferry services operating between the port of Algeciras and Tangier Med are proceeding as expected, with no reported delays or disruptions at this time. The Spanish National Meteorological Agency (Aemet) has issued a yellow warning for heavy swells and rain in the strait area, forecasting east winds reaching speeds between 50 and 61 km/h, particularly affecting regions west of Tarifa and south of Trafalgar.
