Shellfish Harvesting and Sales Banned in Agadir's Imi Ouaddar Area
The Moroccan State Secretariat for Maritime Fisheries has announced a ban on the harvesting and sale of shellfish from the classified shellfish zone of Imi Ouaddar, located in the Agadir region. This suspension will remain in effect until the area is thoroughly decontaminated. The decision follows alarming results from analyses conducted by the National Institute of Halieutic Research (INRH), which revealed the presence of marine toxins in mussels at levels exceeding accepted safety standards.
In light of these findings, consumers are strongly advised to procure only packaged shellfish products that display health identification labels and are sold in authorized retail locations, such as official markets. The announcement underscores the risks associated with unregulated shellfish sold in bulk, which do not guarantee safety for public health.
