SIEL 2026: A Year of Literary Activities in Rabat
In a significant initiative led by the Ministry of Youth, Culture, and Communication, Rabat, recognized as the UNESCO World Book Capital for 2026, is set to host a plethora of literary activities throughout the year, commencing on April 24. This initiative is designed to amplify the reading culture and promote the literary sector in conjunction with the upcoming 31st International Book and Publishing Fair (SIEL 2026), scheduled to take place from May 1 to 10. The organizers aim to engage a diverse audience, reaching out to citizens in hospitals, rehabilitation centers, orphanages, public squares, and even public transportation, thereby bringing literature into the everyday lives of the community.
Rabat: A Cultural Hub
Latifa Moftaqir, the director of the National Archives of Morocco and the commissioner for Rabat World Book Capital 2026, emphasized that Rabat's selection by UNESCO stemmed from a thorough evaluation of the city's historical, intellectual, and cultural significance. She noted that the city boasts a rich tradition of book and knowledge transmission, evident in its numerous mosques and libraries, and supported by modern educational institutions such as universities and cultural centers. This year-long celebration of literature reflects Rabat's commitment to literacy, education, and cultural heritage, further bolstered by its UNESCO World Heritage status acquired in 2012.
Moreover, Rachid El Abdi, president of the Rabat-Salé regional council, highlighted that the year will feature regular public events aimed at ingraining reading practices into daily life. These initiatives are designed to foster greater access to books and authors, especially for students in remote areas, thereby promoting equity in cultural access and a sustainable approach to knowledge development. Charaf Ahmimed, director of UNESCO’s regional office for the Maghreb, also praised Rabat's vibrant book sector, asserting that literature plays a pivotal role in fostering social cohesion and empowerment.
As cities designated as UNESCO World Book Capital commit to promoting reading through diverse activities, Rabat's year-long program will undoubtedly contribute to enriching the literary landscape and enhancing cultural engagement at local and international levels.
