Sierra Leone Reaffirms Support for Morocco's Autonomy Plan at UN Seminar

In a significant development at the UN Committee of 24 (C-24) regional seminar held in Managua, Nicaragua, Sierra Leone has reiterated its steadfast support for Morocco's Autonomy plan, which aims to resolve the long-standing regional dispute concerning the Moroccan Sahara. Kalilu Totangi, Sierra Leone’s Deputy Permanent Representative to the United Nations, underscored the importance of the Moroccan Autonomy initiative during his address, asserting that it is aligned with international law and recognized by the UN Security Council as a "credible and realistic approach" to advance the political dialogue under UN auspices.

During his remarks, Totangi highlighted the adoption of Security Council Resolution 2797 in 2025, which he described as a "historic turning point" in the quest for a definitive resolution to the regional dispute. This resolution establishes a framework based on the Moroccan Autonomy initiative, which has garnered support from over 130 nations globally, indicating a growing international consensus. Sierra Leone's commitment extends to backing the efforts of the UN Secretary-General and his Personal Envoy to the Moroccan Sahara, whose roles are pivotal in facilitating a political process aimed at achieving a just and lasting solution, as outlined in Security Council Resolution 2797.

Moreover, the Sierra Leonean delegation took the opportunity to highlight the ongoing socio-economic and infrastructural development initiatives taking place in the Southern Provinces of Morocco. These projects are designed to promote sustainable development, protect the environment, and celebrate local culture, thereby empowering local communities and enhancing the human development process in the region. Totangi emphasized the necessity of adhering to the ceasefire agreement and commended Morocco for its enhanced cooperation and coordination with the United Nations Mission for the Referendum in Western Sahara (MINURSO). This collaboration is vital in maintaining stability and fostering a conducive environment for further dialogue and development.
