Declining Trends in International Student Arrivals in Canada
In a noteworthy development, Canada has witnessed a substantial drop in the number of foreign students arriving in the country during the first six months of 2026. The Canadian government has set a target of 155,000 new foreign students for 2026, which is a noteworthy 49% reduction from the previous year's goal.

The IRCC has announced plans to issue up to 408,000 study permits in 2026, which includes 155,000 permits for new international students and 253,000 extensions for current students or those returning to their studies. The decline in foreign student numbers can be attributed to several measures instituted by the Canadian government since 2024, including caps on study permits, stricter financial requirements, and enhanced scrutiny of acceptance letters from educational institutions.
Furthermore, the government has expressed its intention to reduce the population of temporary residents to less than 5% of Canada’s overall population by the end of 2027.
