Significant Growth in Electric and Hybrid Vehicles in Morocco's Automotive Market
The Moroccan automotive sector is undergoing a remarkable transformation, highlighted by a substantial increase in the sales of electric and hybrid vehicles. As of the end of September 2026, sales of these eco-friendly vehicles surged by an impressive 74.4%, reaching a total of 29,522 units sold. This trend signifies a continuing decline in the market share of diesel vehicles, which have traditionally dominated the automotive landscape in Morocco.
According to the Association of Vehicle Importers in Morocco (AIVAM), the growth of electric and hybrid vehicle sales is indicative of a broader shift towards electrification in the automotive sector. The combined market share of electric and hybrid vehicles rose to 17.8% from just 11.4% during the same period in 2025, reflecting a significant increase of 6.4 percentage points. This shift highlights a growing consumer preference for vehicles that offer both environmental benefits and advanced technology.
The surge in hybrid vehicle sales has been a key driver of this growth, with conventional hybrids accounting for 11,821 units sold. Additionally, plug-in hybrids have witnessed a staggering growth rate of 120.3%, totaling 9,438 units sold. Light hybrid vehicles also contributed with 4,849 sales, while fully electric vehicles, despite their lower numbers, accounted for 1,497 units sold. Furthermore, electric vehicles equipped with range-extending systems recorded 1,917 units sold, underscoring the evolving technological landscape in the electric vehicle market.
Despite this positive trend in electric and hybrid vehicle sales, diesel vehicles still maintain a stronghold in the Moroccan market. The market share of diesel vehicles decreased to 63.5% from approximately 71% in the same period of the previous year. This reduction in diesel's dominance was evident in September 2026, where electric and hybrid vehicles made up 20.7% of sales, compared to just 15% in September 2025. Meanwhile, the share of diesel vehicles fell to 59.6% during the same month.
The overall growth of the new car market in Morocco also supports these findings, with total vehicle sales reaching 188,495 units in the first nine months of 2026, representing a 13% increase year-on-year. However, it is essential to note that while the growth of electrified vehicles is encouraging, the transition towards fully electric vehicles remains limited. The majority of this growth is driven by various hybrid categories, while diesel vehicles continue to hold a significant position in the Moroccan automotive market.
