Recent Increases in Food Prices
The High Commission for Planning in Morocco has reported a notable rise in food prices observed between February and March of 2026. This increase has primarily affected the prices of vegetables, which saw a substantial surge of 9.7%. Additionally, fruits experienced a 2.6% increase, while meat prices rose by 2.4%. Other food categories such as fish and seafood also contributed to the upward trend with a 1.3% increase, while beverages like coffee, tea, and cocoa saw a modest rise of 0.3%. In contrast, prices for oils and fats decreased by 2.4%, and dairy products including milk, cheese, and eggs fell by 0.2% during the same period.
In a report detailing the consumer price index for March 2026, the High Commission noted an overall increase of 1.2% in the index compared to the previous month. This uptick is attributed to a 1.9% rise in food products and a 0.6% increase in non-food products. Among non-food items, the most significant price hike was in fuel, which soared by 10.7%. The highest increases in the consumer price index were recorded in Guelmim and Al Hoceïma, both rising by 2.7%, followed by Errachidia at 1.8%, and Agadir at 1.6%.
Inflation Trends and Comparisons
When comparing March 2026 to the same month in the previous year, the consumer price index reflected an increase of 0.9%. This rise was driven by a 0.6% increase in food prices and a 1.1% increase in non-food products. Within the non-food sector, price variations ranged from a decrease of 0.4% in the "leisure and culture" category to a notable increase of 3.5% in "various goods and services." Furthermore, the underlying inflation rate, which excludes regulated prices and volatile items, recorded a rise of 1.0% in March 2026 compared to February 2026, yet showed a decrease of 0.6% when compared to March 2025.
