Slight Increase in Dirham Value Against Major Currencies
According to Bank Al-Maghrib, Morocco's central bank, the dirham has experienced a modest increase of 0.8% against the US dollar and 0.6% against the euro during the week spanning from July 30 to August 5, 2026. This uptick in the currency's value reflects ongoing fluctuations in the foreign exchange market, particularly as no auctions were conducted during this period, highlighting a stable yet dynamic economic landscape.
The latest report from the central bank also indicates that Morocco's official reserve assets reached 498 billion dirhams as of July 31, marking an increase of 0.2% compared to the preceding week and a notable 22.7% rise year-on-year. Such growth in reserves is crucial for maintaining the stability of the dirham and supports the overall economic framework of the nation.
Furthermore, Bank Al-Maghrib's interventions averaged a daily amount of 149.3 billion dirhams throughout the week, comprising short-term advances of 53.9 billion dirhams and longer-term repurchase agreements amounting to 47.9 billion dirhams, alongside guaranteed loans totaling 47.5 billion dirhams. This strategic deployment of financial resources underscores the bank's commitment to managing liquidity in the banking sector efficiently.
In the interbank market, the average daily trading volume was recorded at 2.6 billion dirhams, while the interbank interest rate stood at 2.25%. Such metrics are essential for understanding the health of the banking system and the broader financial environment in Morocco. On August 5, 2026, the central bank injected 49.4 billion dirhams into the market through seven-day advances, further indicating proactive measures to ensure liquidity and stability ahead of upcoming financial obligations.
