In a world where rapid advancements in drone technology are redefining military operations, Slovenia has taken center stage by unveiling its state-of-the-art drone detection and countermeasure systems at the Marrakech Airshow. The event, which concluded its eighth edition recently, highlighted the escalating reliance on unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) by both conventional armed forces and non-state militias. This trend has resulted in defense and security companies intensifying their investments in developing sophisticated solutions that integrate electronic jamming systems with cutting-edge technologies aimed at intercepting and neutralizing these aerial threats.
At the heart of this display was the "Lynx" anti-drone system from the Slovenian company Datacon. Designed and rigorously tested to provide comprehensive protection for vital infrastructures such as airports and energy plants, the Lynx system offers an advanced, integrated aerial defense solution. Its modular architecture allows for the incorporation of additional components based on the specific requirements of military operations. This means that users can integrate radar systems and sensors for radio frequency detection and neutralization, as well as electronic spoofing systems for GPS signals, along with remotely operated weapon stations and laser systems to enhance effectiveness and operational reach.
The Lynx system's basic configuration consists of four fully integrated subsystems that work in harmony to detect, identify, and localize aerial targets before neutralizing them electronically. These subsystems include 3D radar, radio frequency detectors, electro-optical surveillance systems, and electronic jammers, all designed to disrupt hostile drones by confusing their flight patterns and severing communication links between the operator and the UAV. Datacon has emphasized that this system, already operational with the Moroccan military, is engineered for continuous operation under various conditions, boasting remarkable flexibility in deployment and the capacity to cover a 360-degree horizontal airspace and a vertical span of 90 degrees. It also features targeted jamming devices that can disrupt drone control without affecting other electronic equipment in the vicinity.
One of the standout features of the Lynx system is its powerful integrated radio frequency detector, which has an operational range of up to 8 kilometers and real-time tracking capabilities for monitoring the movement of 40 drones simultaneously. Furthermore, it can detect and track miniature drones at distances of up to 3 kilometers, while being capable of identifying attack drones and heavy transport aircraft from distances reaching 50 kilometers. This versatility is complemented by the system's fully automated operation for direct neutralization in no-fly zones.
Founded in 1992, Datacon specializes in providing tailored solutions for land and maritime border surveillance and critical infrastructure protection. Its product line includes drone countermeasures, mobile and stationary surveillance platforms, and early fire warning systems such as the "Sova" system, which is utilized by police and border guard agencies in several Balkan and Southeast European countries.
