Efficient Management of Departures at Tangier Med Port
The departure phase for Moroccan expatriates heading to their countries of residence is currently underway as part of the 'Welcome 2026' initiative, overseen by the Mohammed V Foundation for Solidarity. This process is characterized by seamless operations, particularly at the Tangier Med Port, where the crossing activities are executed with remarkable fluidity. The specialized processing system for outgoing travelers at the Tangier Med Port, which is managed at the 'Mediterranean' rest area, has significantly facilitated the movement of passengers. This efficiency is attributed to the early management of travelers who arrive by buses and cars before reaching the port.
Implemented on August 18 and continuing until September 6, the passenger processing system at Tangier Med Port involves the presence of teams from various maritime transport companies that provide the sea link between Tangier Med and Algeciras, coupled with the port authority's teams. These teams are responsible for managing various boarding operations, particularly concerning the 'closed ticket' procedure. Before heading to the port, Moroccan expatriates are able to process their tickets, complete administrative procedures, handle commercial operations, confirm their departure dates and times, and finalize the registration process at the rest area.
Support and Assistance for Travelers
The initiative has successfully assisted 3,961 travelers through the provision of 72 buses and 11 minibuses, facilitating their travel to their countries of residence via maritime routes connecting Tangier Med and Algeciras in southern Spain. The close coordination between the Mediterranean rest area and the port allows for precise evaluation of passenger and vehicle flows according to departure schedules, thereby easing the access for Moroccans worldwide to the port for the final stages of customs and border control inspections.
According to reports from the Maghreb Arab Press Agency, there has been a notable efficiency in accessing Tangier Med Port, significantly reducing the time allocated for passenger checks via buses and cars, especially regarding passport stamping and vehicle customs inspections, thanks to the continuous mobilization of various stakeholders. The introduction of digital systems and automated vehicle plate recognition at the port has also expedited the process of document verification by customs and indirect tax officials, thus shortening the pre-boarding duration on ferries.
Many Moroccan expatriates have praised the close monitoring and social-medical assistance provided under the 'Welcome 2026' initiative, particularly at the 26 reception facilities operated by the foundation, which includes 6 spaces abroad and 20 within Morocco. They commend the efficiency of the processing system for outgoing travelers at Tangier Med Port, which has significantly streamlined access to the port, with the journey from the port entrance to the boarding dock taking no more than 45 minutes.
This initiative is part of a broader series of measures adopted under the supervision of the Mohammed V Foundation for Solidarity in coordination with various stakeholders, involving the organization of flow management areas near ports and the allocation of dedicated lanes for Moroccan family vehicles, alongside the implementation of a closed ticket system.
Thanks to the mobilization of approximately 1,400 social assistants, doctors, and nurses from the Mohammed V Foundation for Solidarity, alongside the engagement of staff and personnel from other involved institutions and departments, the 'Welcome 2026' initiative is progressing smoothly. As of August 22, the 'Welcome Operation' has recorded the arrival of 3,539,761 Moroccans living abroad, with 51.25% of them arriving through maritime routes.
