Somali Referee Omar Artan's Disappointment Over US Entry Denial
Omar Artan, a distinguished Somali referee, has publicly expressed his profound disappointment after being denied entry into the United States to officiate at the FIFA World Cup. Arriving at Miami International Airport from Istanbul, Artan was taken aback when he was informed that he could not enter the country due to the travel restrictions imposed by the previous Trump administration on Somalia and several other nations. This incident marked a significant setback for Artan, who was on the verge of making history as the first Somali referee to officiate a match at the prestigious World Cup event.
Reflecting on the situation, Artan conveyed his feelings of frustration and sadness to the New York Times, stating, "I am very, very disappointed. I’m just simply a referee who’s trying to live his dream, the biggest dream of my life, to come to the World Cup." After his arrival in Miami, Artan was subjected to an extensive questioning session by border officials, lasting over 11 hours, before being held in a separate holding cell for additional hours. Despite possessing all the necessary documentation and a valid visa, he was ultimately put on a flight back to Turkey, a decision that left him and many supporters dismayed.
Recognized as Africa’s referee of the year in 2025, Artan’s aspirations to officiate at the World Cup were dashed not only due to the travel ban but also the bureaucratic challenges he faced upon his arrival in the United States. However, despite the setback, Artan maintained a positive outlook. Speaking to reporters at Istanbul Airport before his return to Somalia, he expressed gratitude to FIFA for their support and remained hopeful about future opportunities. "I feel very good now," he noted, showcasing his resilience in the face of adversity. This incident highlights the complexities of international travel regulations and their profound impact on individuals pursuing their dreams in the world of sports.
