Spain Delivers Avante 1800 Corvette to Morocco: A Historic Diplomatic Shift After 43 Years

Spain's Historic Military Cooperation with Morocco

After over four decades of strained relations, Spain is set to deliver a modern 2,020-ton patrol vessel, the Avante 1800, to Morocco, marking a significant diplomatic milestone between the two nations. The delivery, which has not occurred since 1983, is viewed as a powerful symbol of renewed cooperation and the modernization of Morocco's naval capabilities. The ship, constructed by Navantia in Cádiz, has already commenced sea trials from the San Fernando shipyards, a crucial phase that assesses the vessel's propulsion, electronic systems, and overall stability.

The Avante 1800 measures 87 meters in length and 13 meters in width, featuring a CODAD propulsion system powered by four MAN 175D engines. This advanced vessel will significantly enhance Morocco's maritime surveillance and security operations within its exclusive economic zones. Both Spanish and Moroccan officials regard this contract as a strong indicator of bilateral cooperation and a pivotal step in modernizing the Moroccan armed forces.

Significance of the Avante 1800 Delivery

This program marks the first military ship from Spain to be delivered to Morocco since the corvette Lieutenant-Colonel Errahmani in 1983, underlining the political importance of this transaction. The ongoing sea trials are expected to last several weeks to ensure the vessel's reliability before its official handover. Upon delivery, the patrol ship will be supplied with spare parts, technical documentation, tools, and comprehensive training for the Moroccan crew, thereby solidifying the cooperative defense relationship between the two countries. This development not only reflects a shift in military ties but also signals a broader diplomatic reconciliation after years of tension.
