Spain’s Official Statement on Migrant Flows
On September 2, 2026, the Spanish Ministry of the Interior publicly refuted claims regarding the existence of a police report that allegedly implicated Morocco in orchestrating a significant influx of migrants into Ceuta. This denial came after a tumultuous period in late July, during which more than 70,000 individuals crossed into the Spanish enclave, either by swimming or walking from the nearby Moroccan coast, resulting in tragic fatalities among the migrants.
Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez had previously indicated that Morocco was not responsible for this massive migrant surge, while also pointing fingers at Israel, Russia, and far-right groups for disseminating misleading information about the situation. This assertion was contradicted by an article from the Spanish online publication "El Español," which referenced the National Migration and Border Center's findings that suggested Moroccan security forces may have guided the operation, although the context was claimed to be unrelated to immigration.
In light of these reports, Spanish Interior Minister Fernando Grande-Marlaska tasked the police with verifying the claims related to a governmental report that supposedly highlighted the role of Moroccan security forces in the incident. Sources from the ministry revealed that Grande-Marlaska directed a message to National Police Chief Francisco Pardo, urging an investigation into these allegations, which had been forwarded to a judge compiling information on the migration event.
Minister Grande-Marlaska stressed the necessity for any information of this nature to be communicated promptly to the National Security Council and other relevant authorities. In response, Police Chief Pardo reassured the minister that there was no police report attributing any planning or execution of the events in Ceuta to Moroccan security forces. This clarification aims to dispel any misconceptions arising from the ongoing media speculation surrounding the migrant crisis.
