Spain Uncovers Major Cocaine Trafficking Operation
In a significant crackdown on drug trafficking, Spanish authorities have seized more than 3 tons of cocaine aboard a vessel near the Canary Islands. The ship, named "GT Victory" and flying the Panamanian flag, left Gibraltar en route to Morocco, but its tracking signal had been lost for over 50 days, raising concerns about the maritime routes used by Moroccan smuggling networks in the international drug trade.
According to the Spanish news agency EFE, the operation involved the National Police, Civil Guard, and Customs Surveillance Service, who intercepted the tugboat and discovered a total of 3,361 kilograms of cocaine neatly packaged into 139 bales. The authorities also arrested eight crew members on board, marking a notable success in the fight against drug smuggling.
The tugboat had departed Gibraltar on July 13 and had indicated Morocco as its destination. However, it ceased transmitting its location via the Automatic Identification System (AIS) for more than seven weeks, only to reappear in the Atlantic off the coast of the Canary Islands. Reports from Canarias en Pleno highlighted that the vessel used false data and coordinates to obscure its true location, complicating tracking efforts.
Further insights from Canary Maritime suggested that the vessel was indeed heading towards Morocco prior to its disappearance from tracking systems, referring to it as a "ghost ship". The successful interception was made possible through the collaborative efforts of various security and intelligence agencies, both Spanish and international, specializing in combating drug trafficking.
