Milagros Tolón, the Spanish Minister of Education, Vocational Training, and Sports, has reaffirmed her government's dedication to collaborating with Morocco and Portugal in the successful organization of the 2030 FIFA World Cup. In her statements, she expressed confidence in Spain's capability to host the final match of the tournament, highlighting that Spain possesses all the necessary attributes to accommodate such a significant global sporting event.
These remarks by Tolón follow reports from British media suggesting that FIFA President Gianni Infantino proposed to Morocco the opportunity to host the 2030 World Cup final in exchange for support in his future re-election campaign. FIFA, however, swiftly denied these allegations, labeling them as "false and misleading" and clarified that the decision regarding the final match's venue has not yet been finalized and will be made at the appropriate time.
Spain's Experience and Commitment Amidst Political Challenges
During a radio interview on Thursday, the Spanish minister expressed her surprise at the claims made by The Times newspaper. Nevertheless, she emphasized that the official denial from FIFA strengthens confidence in the decision-making process. Tolón asserted that Spain deserves to host the final based on its extensive experience in organizing major sporting events.
When questioned about whether the ongoing crisis related to the city of Ceuta might impact the Spanish government's stance on the joint organization with Morocco, Tolón refrained from linking the two issues. She affirmed that decisions regarding the tournament's organization fall under FIFA's jurisdiction and reiterated that the Spanish government remains committed to working with Morocco and Portugal to ensure the success of the 2030 edition and to make it the best in the history of the tournament.
Additionally, the minister downplayed the significance of internal disagreements within the Spanish government coalition, particularly after the party 'Sumar' called for a reevaluation of the partnership with Morocco. She emphasized that the current priority for the Spanish government is to guarantee a successful and extraordinary edition of the World Cup.
