Spanish and Moroccan Authorities Collaborate to Dismantle Daesh-Linked Terror Cell

The Bureau of Central Judicial Investigations (BCIJ), under the General Directorate of Territorial Surveillance (DGST), announced on Wednesday, March 25, the successful dismantling of a terror cell affiliated with the organization known as Daesh. This operation was carried out in coordination with the General Information Commissariat (CGI) of the Spanish National Police, highlighting the collaborative efforts in combating terrorism between Morocco and Spain.

The terror cell, consisting of three individuals operating across the two nations, was neutralized during simultaneous interventions conducted on both sides of the Mediterranean Sea. In a coordinated effort, two members were apprehended in Tangier by the special forces of the DGST, while Spanish authorities detained the alleged leader of the cell in Majorca.

Initial investigations reveal that the two individuals arrested in Morocco were involved in the financing and logistical support for fighters active within Daesh branches operating in the Sahel region and Somalia. The leader of the cell, apprehended in Spain, is suspected of planning an attack on Spanish soil, adhering to the operational methods of individual terrorism, often referred to as the "lone wolf" strategy.

The two suspects detained in Tangier have been placed under custody, supervised by the prosecutor's office responsible for terrorism cases, as the BCIJ works to uncover the full extent of the network's connections at both national and regional levels.

This operation is part of a longstanding history of security cooperation between Morocco and Spain. Since 2014, the two nations have jointly dismantled over 30 terrorist cells, significantly contributing to thwarting major threats to their respective security. The BCIJ emphasizes that this latest operation illustrates the robustness of the strategic partnership between Rabat and Madrid in the realm of counter-terrorism.
