Spanish Left Takes a Stand on Ceuta Migration Crisis
In Spain, left-wing parties are actively engaging in the ongoing debate surrounding the migration crisis in Ceuta, refusing to allow right-wing and far-right factions to monopolize the narrative, particularly as these groups utilize the situation to criticize Morocco. Following recent statements from the United Left party condemning Rabat, the coalition known as Sumar has also articulated its position. In a statement released on August 24th, Sumar accused the Moroccan government of "instrumentalizing the crisis for political purposes to exert pressure on the Spanish government." They emphasized that such behavior is "unacceptable and cannot go unanswered."
However, Sumar did not delineate what specific objectives this alleged pressure from Morocco entails, which has led to frustration among some Sahrawi media outlets that anticipated a more explicit reference to the Western Sahara issue. Last week, the United Left had expressed concerns regarding the strengthening of military cooperation between Morocco and the United States, accusing Morocco of conducting a "hybrid war" and demanding that the Spanish government provide a detailed report to the Lower House regarding the military alliance between Rabat, Washington, and Tel Aviv.
These various positions emerge as recent polls in Spain suggest that the migration crisis in Ceuta may benefit the Popular Party (PP) and Vox. According to these surveys, both parties could potentially form a government should early elections occur. Conversely, the PSOE and its allies in Sumar may face significant losses as a result of this ongoing situation.
