Significant Drug Smuggling Attempt Foiled at Ceuta Border

Moroccan authorities have apprehended a 53-year-old Spanish national at the border crossing that separates Ceuta from Morocco, accused of attempting to smuggle 32 kilograms of hashish concealed within a vehicle bearing Spanish license plates. This incident was reported by the Moroccan newspaper Al Sabah.

The operation took place late Sunday night at Bab Sebta, the border checkpoint connecting Morocco to the autonomous city of Ceuta. Customs officials and security agents conducted a thorough inspection of a Volkswagen Caddy van that had just arrived at the border control. According to the Moroccan media outlet, the search revealed various packages of hashish hidden in secret compartments built into the vehicle’s structure, a method allegedly designed to evade detection during surveillance checks.

The inspection focused on different parts of the vehicle's body after the agents detected irregularities. The drug packages were strategically distributed in concealed spaces and meticulously arranged for clandestine transport of the narcotic substance. The suspect was intercepted before completing the border crossing into Ceuta and was immediately placed under police custody.

Following the intervention, the accused was handed over to the anti-drug unit of the Moroccan provincial judicial police, which has initiated an investigation to ascertain the origin and intended destination of the drugs, as well as any potential links to international trafficking networks. This investigation is being conducted under the supervision of the relevant prosecutor’s office in Morocco, aiming to determine whether the detainee acted independently or was part of an organized group dedicated to transporting hashish between Morocco and Spain.
