Spanish Police Dismantle International Drug Trafficking Network Using Drones

Spanish Authorities Target Drug Trafficking with Advanced Technology

On May 30, 2026, Spanish law enforcement successfully executed a significant operation against international drug trafficking networks that have been flooding Europe with cannabis from Morocco. This sophisticated operation utilized advanced methods, including drones, to intercept and thwart the activities of a criminal organization that operated between Morocco, Ceuta, the Basque Country, and even extended to France. The police reported that the criminals employed drones and vehicles equipped with complex hidden compartments to smuggle cannabis and cocaine through unconventional air and land routes.

The Spanish police emphasized that this operation represents not merely the dismantling of a traditional smuggling network but rather highlights a “dangerous shift in drug trafficking” practices, as criminal organizations have now turned to the skies, employing drones that traverse the sea to inundate Europe with these harmful substances. Following the operation, eight individuals were arrested after simultaneous raids were conducted in multiple areas, shedding light on the evolving tactics of organized crime in the region.

According to investigative sources, the operations began in 2025, revealing that the network relied on fixed-wing drones to cross the Strait of Gibraltar, transporting drug shipments originating from Morocco into Spanish territory. Once received, these shipments were concealed within vehicles that contained secret compartments, making them difficult to detect before being transported to northern Spain, particularly the city of Vitoria, and subsequently distributed through French networks engaged in drug distribution across Europe.
