National Police Disrupts Major Drug Trafficking Operation
The National Police of Spain has successfully dismantled a significant criminal organization based in the provinces of Cádiz and Álava, which was engaged in the transportation of narcotics from Morocco and southern Spain to France. So far, eight individuals have been arrested in connection with this operation, known as 'Operation HORUS'. The initiative began last year and revealed that the organization was utilizing unmanned fixed-wing aircraft to aerially introduce large quantities of drugs, including hashish and cocaine, across the Strait of Gibraltar into Spanish territory.
Once the drugs reached Spain, they were hidden within vehicles that had been meticulously modified with sophisticated double compartments designed to conceal the illicit cargo. Following this, the narcotics were transported to Vitoria, where they were distributed to various French criminal organizations involved in drug trafficking.
During the course of the investigation, authorities managed to seize one of the drones being used for the transportation of drugs. This large drone, boasting a wingspan of four meters and equipped with four motors, is capable of carrying loads of up to 20 kilograms. These aircraft can traverse the distance between Spain and Morocco in mere minutes, achieving speeds exceeding 100 kilometers per hour.
The investigation, led by the Instruction Section of the Algeciras Court of First Instance, culminated in five simultaneous entries and searches in the cities of Algeciras and Vitoria, leading to the arrest of eight suspects. During these operations, law enforcement officials confiscated 40 kilograms of hashish, two kilograms of cocaine, two vehicles used for drug transportation, 14,000 euros in cash, and one of the drones employed by the criminal organization, along with various other items linked to their illicit activities.
