Spanish Police Uncovers New Details in Moroccan Drug Tunnel Investigation

The investigation being conducted by Spanish authorities into the secret tunnels used for smuggling cannabis from Morocco to Ceuta and subsequently to Europe has revealed new insights regarding a scheme to mislead the course of justice. This scheme involved using the identity of a deceased individual to divert suspicion away from the main suspect linked to the marble warehouse where the first smuggling tunnel was discovered.

Spanish security investigations have indicated the involvement of Moroccan drug lord Abdullah Al-Hajj Al-Sadiq in a network of tunnels established for the trafficking of cannabis from Morocco to Spain and further into Europe. The most recent development includes plans to construct a third secret tunnel aimed at ensuring a continuous path for smuggling cannabis into Ceuta.

According to local media sources in Ceuta, citing information from the Spanish police, the primary suspect managing the warehouse remains at large despite a warrant for his arrest and a judicial order for his imprisonment issued by the Spanish courts. The investigation has revealed that members of the network discussed, in wiretapped conversations, obtaining identification documents belonging to a deceased person or an individual unknown to the authorities. This was intended for use in creating contracts and documents related to the warehouse that housed the first secret tunnel.

The plan, as outlined in the investigation, was designed to present the warehouse as being rented under a third party’s name rather than under the primary suspect’s control, thereby distancing him from accountability in the trafficking of large quantities of drugs into Ceuta, then to southern Spain, and ultimately to Europe. However, these attempts were thwarted following intervention by Spanish security forces, which resulted in the dismantling of significant parts of the network and the arrest of several individuals. Additionally, a second tunnel was discovered, and investigations into a third tunnel under construction were initiated.

Spanish authorities have confirmed that these tunnels constituted a complex logistical framework used for years in the trafficking of cannabis from Morocco to Ceuta, marking one of the most notable smuggling cases seen in the region in recent years.

New Security Operations Against Moroccan Drug Trafficking Networks

Efforts by Moroccan networks to flood Spain with drugs continue unabated, as security forces recently executed three operations against cannabis traffickers from Morocco to Ceuta, resulting in the seizure of significant amounts of narcotics and the arrest of several suspects.

In this context, the Spanish Civil Guard thwarted a drug smuggling attempt coming from Morocco that was en route from Ceuta to Algeciras. This was after the arrest of an individual driving a vehicle loaded with cannabis, which was cleverly concealed within the tire cavities of the car in an effort to evade detection by security inspections.

Reports indicate that the suspected network employs a meticulous method of equipping vehicles to hide drugs within the tires, aiming to avoid detection by the canine units of the Civil Guard. Furthermore, Spanish authorities in Ceuta intercepted an attempt to smuggle a significant quantity of cannabis intended for entry into the city via swimming from Moroccan shores. This intervention was made possible through thermal surveillance systems that detected the suspect near the Tarajal area.

According to local media sources, a patrol from the Spanish Civil Guard swiftly intervened to apprehend the individual, who was found carrying a backpack containing a quantity of cannabis. This method of drug smuggling by swimming into Ceuta is no longer an isolated incident; rather, it has become one of the strategies employed by some traffickers in light of increased scrutiny on traditional land and maritime crossings.

In a related context, local police in Ceuta arrested two individuals on a motorcycle after seizing a significant quantity of cannabis during a routine field inspection aimed at enhancing road safety and combating drug trafficking.
