Spiritual Convergence: Thousands Gather at the Tijaniyya Zaouia in Fes During Ramadan

Global Pilgrimage to the Tijaniyya Zaouia in Fes

As the holy month of Ramadan comes to a close, the city of Fes is enveloped in a distinctive spiritual atmosphere, marked by the arrival of hundreds of Tijaniyya disciples from various parts of the world. This remarkable gathering highlights the profound spiritual connection these followers have with Sheikh Ahmad Tijani and reinforces Fes’s status as a global Sufi destination. The Le360 team has closely followed this significant event, capturing the essence of the crowd in the ancient streets of Fes. Disciples from numerous African nations, including Senegal, Nigeria, Mali, and Mauritania, alongside visitors from Europe and North America, have chosen to commemorate this time in the sacred space of the Tijaniyya Zaouia. The ambiance is characterized by remembrance and spiritual communion, unified by their affiliation to the Tijaniyya order.

Personal Stories of Spiritual Journeys

Abdullah Diyani, a disciple from Senegal residing in Paris, shared his commitment to visiting Fes biannually for over a decade, specifically during Ramadan and the celebration of the Prophet's birthday. He expressed that the last days of Ramadan hold special significance for him, tracing his connection to the Tijaniyya order back to 1997, when he first received teachings from a prominent disciple who introduced him to the "Wird" (spiritual invocation). For Abdullah, visiting the Sheikh's mausoleum is a cherished spiritual privilege, embodying a deep belief among followers that the call to the zaouia transcends mere personal choice—it is a spiritual summons. Each visit renews his sense of tranquility and spiritual fulfillment, as well as provides an opportunity to engage with disciples from various nationalities and exchange knowledge about the order's teachings.

Magati, an Italian visitor of Senegalese descent, also conveyed her immense appreciation for the atmosphere within the Tijaniyya zaouia. This year’s visit was a profound experience for her, allowing her to celebrate the spiritual heritage of the order in an extraordinary environment. She described the experience as deeply moving, filled with humility and peace, leaving an indelible mark that is challenging to articulate.

Mohamed Hanaoui, a leader in the Ahmad Tijaniyya order, emphasized that the influx of disciples to the zaouia is not a recent phenomenon; it dates back to the time of the Sheikh himself. Throughout history, followers have braved long journeys to visit this sacred site, viewing these pilgrimages as a form of "paying homage" to their Sheikh due to his pivotal role in disseminating religious teachings across a broad network of disciples who have carried his message to various regions in Africa and beyond. The Ahmad Tijaniyya order is recognized as a Sufi school dedicated to self-purification and moral rectitude, founded on three core principles of remembrance: seeking forgiveness, sending blessings upon the Prophet, and reciting "There is no god but Allah." Sheikh Tijani's approach to his mission was rooted in spiritual education and righteous conduct.

Hanaoui elaborated on the Sheikh's scholarly and missionary journey, noting that he undertook educational travels before settling in Fes. His initial entry into Morocco involved two significant occasions: first to study at the University of Al Quaraouiyine, and second in Taza, where he learned under Sheikh Ahmad Tawash. Ultimately, his teachings spread across numerous cities and countries, leading him to establish his base in Fes. Many scholars and disciples who graduated from Al Quaraouiyine have also played crucial roles in promoting the Tijaniyya order globally by founding zaouias that bear the Sheikh's name, further enhancing its spiritual radiance beyond Morocco.

Each year during Ramadan, the zaouia witnesses a growing influx of visitors, encouraged by travel agencies that organize group trips under favorable conditions from African nations. Meanwhile, disciples from Europe continue to visit year-round, reflecting the zaouia's established status as a global spiritual destination. This diverse international presence underscores the unique standing of the Tijaniyya Zaouia in Fes, serving as a space for spiritual unity and cultural exchange, and as a religious beacon that attracts thousands of seekers looking for peace and spiritual rejuvenation during one of the most significant periods of the Islamic calendar.
