Transformative Investments for Water Supply in Casablanca-Settat
Since the initiation of its operations on October 1, 2024, the SRM Casablanca-Settat has embarked on a vigorous investment strategy aimed at revolutionizing the water supply infrastructure in the region. Following a remarkable investment of 2.6 billion dirhams in 2025, the company has set an ambitious target of 7.3 billion dirhams for 2026. This dual-purpose initiative not only seeks to support the economic and urban development of the region but also aims to promote equitable access to resources across various prefectures and provinces.
Among the significant projects underway is the construction of twelve new potable water reservoirs. These critical infrastructures are expected to enhance existing storage capacities by over 22%, translating to an additional volume of 227,000 cubic meters. This expansion is part of a broader strategy to bolster the resilience of the potable water supply system against recurring water stress episodes that frequently impact the region. In tandem with this effort, SRM Casablanca-Settat is also spearheading a major project focused on transferring desalinated water produced by the upcoming seawater desalination station in the region. This initiative, which involves an investment of 2.4 billion dirhams, includes the creation of a more than 100-kilometer long water supply network with pipe diameters ranging from 600 mm to 2,400 mm. The construction plans also encompass two reservoirs with a combined storage capacity of 90,000 cubic meters, along with two pumping stations capable of delivering 9,800 liters per second and 6,000 liters per second, respectively. The completion of these infrastructures is slated for the end of 2026.
Innovative Solutions for Water Treatment and Supply
The SRM Casablanca-Settat is actively addressing supply deficiencies in the western areas of Casablanca, including Hay Hassani, Errahma, Dar Bouazza, and Ouled Azzouz, where residents have often experienced inadequate water supply, particularly in higher floors of buildings. The nearly completed project has involved the construction of a main reservoir with a capacity of 70,000 cubic meters in Hay Hassani, alongside two secondary reservoirs of 20,000 cubic meters in Errahma and 25,000 cubic meters in Dar Bouazza. Additionally, 14 kilometers of pipelines with diameters between 800 mm and 1,200 mm have been laid out, with a total investment exceeding 580 million dirhams.
To combat potential water shortages and diversify available resources, SRM is also overseeing a program that includes 28 monobloc desalination and brackish water demineralization stations. This initiative represents a total investment of 400 million dirhams, with 128 million dirhams funded by the Casablanca-Settat Regional Council. Ultimately, these installations are expected to yield an annual production of 8.19 million cubic meters of water. With approximately 90% of the program already completed, 21 stations are currently operational—eight in Settat, five in El Jadida, two in Berrechid, two in Nouaceur, two in Sidi Bennour, one in Médiouna, and one in Mohammedia. Since their inauguration, these facilities have produced over 2.6 million cubic meters of potable water, with plans for an additional seven stations currently underway. Four of these are nearing completion, including two in Sidi Rahal with a combined capacity of 40 liters per second, one in Deroua at 3 liters per second, and one in Sidi Hajjaj at 5 liters per second, all set to be operational by the end of June 2026. Moreover, three other stations are under construction in the Mansouria commune within the Benslimane province, which, with a total capacity of 60 liters per second, represent the largest project within this program, scheduled to commence operations by the end of July 2026.
Furthermore, the Médiouna wastewater treatment plant (STEP) is undergoing a significant expansion project led by SRM Casablanca-Settat. With a budget close to 109 million dirhams, this project aims to double the existing treatment capacity from 3,800 cubic meters per day to 7,600 cubic meters per day, addressing the growing demands on the facility. Launched at the end of December 2024, the project is currently 65% complete and is expected to finish before year-end. This expansion will optimize existing equipment while introducing new infrastructures, including enhanced pre-treatment systems and improved odor management solutions, particularly important due to the proximity of residential areas. The expansion will also feature a new treatment line based on biological activated sludge processes followed by clarification, along with tertiary treatment through sand filtration and ultraviolet disinfection. The ultimate goal is to produce high-quality treated water for irrigation of green spaces in Casablanca, thus contributing to more sustainable water resource management.
