Togo and Morocco's Agricultural Partnership Takes Shape
The launch of the Regional Center for Agricultural Mechanization (CRMA) in Tové marks a significant milestone in the collaboration between Togo and Morocco, aimed at revolutionizing the Togolese agricultural landscape. This initiative, inaugurated by the President of the National Assembly, Komi Sélom Klassou, represents the culmination of an agreement forged in 2023 between the Togolese Ministry of Agriculture and Morocco's Office Chérifien des Phosphates (OCP), the world's leading phosphate exporter. The CRMA is poised to offer an array of services designed to support farmers and enhance agricultural productivity.
The center will provide five core services, including the rental of agricultural machinery, mechanization services, sales of spare parts, user training, and equipment maintenance, in addition to supplying fertilizers. A mobile soil analysis laboratory will be an integral part of this initiative, enabling farmers to make informed decisions regarding soil health and crop management. With projections indicating that over 600,000 farmers will benefit from these services, the center is expected to engage nearly 40 local businesses, thus stimulating the local economy and fostering a vibrant agricultural ecosystem.
The overarching goal of this initiative is to alleviate the challenges faced by farmers, attract youth into agriculture, reduce post-harvest losses, and ultimately improve crop yields. As stated by Antoine Lékpa Gbégbéni, the Minister of Agriculture, the CRMA is envisioned as a technological hub dedicated to directly serving the needs of local producers. This initiative aligns with Togo's broader agricultural modernization program, which aims for significant advancements by the year 2034.
