Strengthening Bilateral Relations: Austria and Morocco's Commitment to Regional Stability

Austria and Morocco Enhance Bilateral Ties

During a working visit to Vienna by Moroccan Foreign Minister Nasser Bourita, Austria and Morocco have taken significant steps to bolster their bilateral relations. In a joint communiqué with Beate Meinl-Reisinger, Austria's Federal Minister for European and International Affairs, Austria articulated its stance on the contentious issue of Western Sahara, also referred to as Moroccan Sahara. The Austrian government emphasized the importance of current international developments and the necessity for a stable regional policy that can effectively address ongoing conflicts.

Support for Autonomy and Peace Efforts

A key focus of the discussions was the endorsement of UN Security Council Resolution 2797 (2025). According to the state news agency MAP, Austria expressed its view that "genuine autonomy under Moroccan sovereignty is one of the most viable solutions" for resolving the long-standing regional conflict. This position aligns Austria with the growing international consensus that recognizes the Moroccan autonomy plan as a credible foundation for UN-led negotiations aimed at achieving a peaceful resolution.

The meeting further reinforced support for the initiatives of the UN Secretary-General and his personal envoy, with the goal of reaching a fair political solution that is acceptable to all parties involved. Austria explicitly welcomed Morocco's willingness to provide a detailed explanation of the practical implementation of autonomy within its state framework. This step is regarded as a significant contribution to promoting peace and security in the Maghreb region, which holds considerable geopolitical relevance for European partners.
