Strengthening Franco-Moroccan Relations: A New Era of Partnership

The Consul General of France in Marrakech has praised the deep-rooted relationships between Morocco and France, affirming that both nations are embarking on a new phase of partnership characterized by trust, friendship, and diverse areas of cooperation. This statement was made during a speech delivered on July 14, coinciding with the celebration of Bastille Day, at the Gardens of Dar Moulay Ali in Marrakech. The event witnessed the presence of Moroccan officials, elected representatives, and members of the French community.

During his address, the Consul General expressed that this year's celebration holds a special significance for him, as it marks his first time presiding over the Bastille Day festivities in his capacity as Consul General of France in Marrakech. He highlighted that his appointment in Marrakech has been an "exceptional privilege," emphasizing the warmth and hospitality he has experienced since his arrival, which he believes reflects the unique bond shared between Morocco and France. He conveyed a sense of peace that characterizes the Kingdom, along with pride in its rich history and traditions.

The Essence of Franco-Moroccan Relations

The Consul General articulated that Morocco is a country moving forward, blending authenticity with modernity, stability with boldness, and openness with rootedness. He expressed his eagerness to explore more of Morocco and rely on his Moroccan friends to deepen his understanding of this vibrant nation. Linking the celebration of July 14 to the city of Marrakech, he described it as a hub of meeting, culture, hospitality, and global openness. He noted that the values of the French National Day—liberty, equality, and fraternity—resonate profoundly in Marrakech, a city that has historically embraced exchanges between peoples and civilizations.

The Consul General conveyed his delight in welcoming Moroccan friends to this occasion, viewing it as a gesture of gratitude for the warm reception that the French community receives throughout the year. He extended his appreciation to the Moroccan authorities for their participation and for maintaining a strong relationship of trust and daily cooperation between Moroccan and French institutions.

Political and Economic Partnerships on the Rise

Reaffirming that Morocco and France have injected new momentum into their partnership in recent months, the Consul General highlighted a shared desire to deepen political dialogue, enhance economic exchanges, and develop future projects. He reviewed several milestones that reflect the intensity of bilateral relations, such as a joint military exercise between the Royal Armed Forces and the French military in Errachidia. He also mentioned the visit of the French Minister of the Interior to Marrakech during the Interpol General Assembly, noting that this event marked an organizational success for Morocco and a triumph for France following the election of its candidate to lead the organization.

Additionally, the Consul General discussed ministerial meetings focusing on sectors such as digitalization, justice, agriculture, foreign trade, and foreign affairs. He revealed that these gatherings serve two primary objectives: preparing for a state visit by His Majesty King Mohammed VI to France in the fall and laying the groundwork for a Moroccan-French treaty envisioned by the leaders of both countries during a state visit by the French President to Morocco in 2024. This treaty is set to be the first of its kind between France and a non-European country, outlining the trajectory of relations between the two nations for decades to come. The Consul General identified three priorities for this treaty: offering joint solutions to international challenges, enhancing security, and supporting sectors that will drive tomorrow's economy while strengthening friendship and understanding between the two societies.

In his speech, he dedicated a part of his address to the youth, emphasizing that both countries share a common ambition towards the new generations. He remarked that the youth in Morocco and France are endowed with talent, creativity, and a spirit of initiative. He stressed that the shared responsibility lies in providing the means for success, education, and innovation.

The Consul General also underscored the vital role played by the French community in Marrakech, noting that the human connections between the Moroccan and French peoples form the essence of their bilateral relationship. He reflected on the scenes of French and Moroccan crowds celebrating together in the streets of France, embodying a spirit of friendship and respect that reinforces the unique human bond between the two countries. He highlighted the dynamic presence of the French community within the consular circle of Marrakech, with approximately 10,000 registered individuals from Marrakech to Essaouira and from Ouarzazate to Merzouga. This figure has increased by more than 20 percent over the past three years, along with the presence of unregistered French citizens and around two million French tourists visiting the region annually. He encouraged French residents to register with the consulate, viewing it as a guarantee of security and a means to improve services and participate in the upcoming presidential elections.

In conclusion, the Consul General extended his greetings to all individuals, both French and Moroccan, contributing to the strengthening of this exceptional relationship. He acknowledged the efforts of professors, businesspeople, researchers, artists, elected officials, associations, entrepreneurs, civil servants, and engaged citizens, affirming that their daily work constitutes the true foundation of Franco-Moroccan friendship. He also expressed gratitude to the local authorities, particularly the regional Wilaya, the Municipality of Marrakech, and the security forces, for their contributions to organizing and securing the Bastille Day celebrations. He concluded his speech by commending the teams at the French Consulate for their ongoing commitment to serving citizens and fostering Franco-Moroccan relations.
